The Program:

Lifetime Gifting: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Both the driving force behind many estate planning strategies and a perilous path for uninitiated transferors, lifetime gifting has gained increased currency given the prospect of change in the federal gift and estate tax exemption as well as the unprecedented generational transfer of wealth occurring in the United States.  This presentation aims to explore best practices for lifetime gifting strategies (the “good”), practices that should be approached with caution (the “bad”), and practices that are flat-out ugly.  Due to the amount of lawyer jokes that involve changing a lightbulb, we’ve included a valuation expert in our panel to further enhance your audit-ory pleasure.  Topics include issues surrounding asset choice, valuation discounts, and various estate planning structural considerations.

Parking is available in the building's parking garage. The garage entrance is on 15th Street. Evening rate parking fees are $15 after 3pm.

Presented By:

Christopher Cole is a Partner in Taft Stettinius & Hollister’s Private Client Group.  Chris has practiced as an estate planning attorney for over a decade and represents ultra-high-net-worth individuals, families, and family offices.  As part of these relationships, Chris aims to craft strategic and enduring approaches for his clients as opposed to simply playing a transactional role, and he works closely with fellow advisors to achieve clients’ wider goals.

His areas of expertise include U.S. federal transfer tax planning, adjacent income tax planning issues for the private client, the administration of trusts and estates, business succession planning, and family office structuring/administration.

Rachel Radford is an attorney in the Private Client group at Williams Weese Pepple & Ferguson. She advises high-net-worth individuals and families on testamentary and lifetime planning strategies geared toward the tax-efficient transfer of wealth across multiple generations, including the creation of various forms of irrevocable trusts; the implementation of family limited liability companies, limited partnerships, and other special purpose vehicles; and administration and modification of existing trusts. She also advises clients on federal transfer tax issues and reporting positions, charitable planning, estate administration, and marital agreements. Rachel’s priority in advising clients is translating her technical knowledge into a wealth transfer plan that meets her clients’ personal and family-oriented goals.

Chris Anderson is a Partner in Bennett Thrasher's Disputes, Valuation & Forensics practice. He has experience with privately held business valuation, quantification of discounts for lack of marketability, carried interest valuations and FLP valuation. Chris has significant experience in estate planning and succession planning for private business owners.

He works closely with companies to plan and prepare for transition or exit events, estate planning, business divorce and marital divorce. He also works to resolve shareholder disputes related to valuation issues which may arise from shareholder buyouts or divorce. These engagements require careful consideration of the marketability and control characteristics of the subject interest along with industry expertise. He has prepared valuation analyses in many industries, including construction, healthcare, manufacturing, cannabis, software, banking, distribution, professional services, wealth management, consumer packaged goods and real estate.

The meeting begins with networking and drinks and appetizers at 4:00 p.m.
